Before Surgery

At Dr. Phillips Animal Hospital, we pride ourselves on ensuring your pet has a comfortable and safe stay with us and while under our care. With the exception of life-threatening emergencies, your pet will need a pre-surgery appointment to go over medical history and health assessment. Complications with surgery is a concern for any pet owner, which is why we are happy to answer any questions or concerns you have during this exam.

Pre-Surgery Appointment

To ensure your pet’s safety, before any surgery is carried out, your pet will need an initial appointment and check-up with our vet. This pre-operative assessment allows us to ensure your pet is given the appropriate treatment they need, are healthy enough for the surgery, and no other medical conditions will complicate the surgery or put your pet at risk.

During this appointment we will:

Go over your pet’s medical history
Conduct a physical examination
Go over blood work and advise if further testing is needed
Perform diagnostic tests such as X-Rays, Ultrasounds, Biopsies, ECG, Blood Pressure, Cytologies, or Blood Work (only if necessary)

At Dr. Phillips Animal Hospital, we want to ensure your pet receives the right treatment the first time, every time, and ensure the surgery is as safe and complication free as possible. Following this appointment, we will discuss options and schedule the surgery.

What To Bring to Your Pet’s Operation

If you haven’t sent the following information to our office prior to your appointment, please bring:

Pet’s medical history
Previous diagnostic images (X-rays, CT Scans, Ultrasound, MRI, Biopsy)
Any questions or concerns you have about the surgery
Additional information about your pets such as behaviors or symptoms you have noticed leading up to the appointment

Please leave toys or blankets in the car or at home. We understand you want your pet to feel comfortable, but these items can get lost or dirty at our hospital. Please save them for the recovery process.

Preparing For Your Pet’s Surgery

We request that owners:

Withhold food 12 hours before surgery
Limit stress and exertion for your pet the morning of their surgery

Our team will inform you of any specific requirements for your pet during their pre-surgery appointment.

Pre-Surgical Exam

Before surgery, our team will conduct a pre-surgical exam to make sure your pet is safe to operate on. During a pre-surgical exam, our team checks your pet is:

Hydrated
Not in heat
At a safe blood pressure
At a safe respiratory rate
Safe and comfortable body temperature
Not suffering from heart murmur
Not suffering a fever
Not fighting infection
